Match Report: Worthing vs Jersey
Season Opener Ends in Hard-Fought Away Victory
Jersey kicked off their season with an early start and a challenging away fixture against a strong Worthing side. In what proved to be an intense and physical encounter, Jersey showed resilience, character and defensive determination to come away with a deserved victory.
The opening stages were closely contested. An early lineout deep in the Worthing half and a scrum platform gave Jersey some attacking opportunities, but both sides defended well. After 16 minutes the scores remained level at 0-0, thanks in large part to some outstanding Jersey defence.
Worthing eventually broke the deadlock in the 17th minute with the first try of the afternoon. The conversion was missed, giving the home side a 5-0 lead. Jersey's task became even harder when a yellow card reduced them to 14 players, and Worthing extended their advantage with a penalty to move 8-0 ahead.
Despite the setback, Jersey responded strongly. Arthur Mangematin crossed for the Jerseys' first try on 37 minutes, and Louis Pallant added the conversion to narrow the gap to 8-7. That was how the score remained at half-time, leaving everything to play for in the second period.
Jersey started the second half brightly and took the lead shortly after the restart when Nick Stump scored a try in the corner , after an excellent period of play from the whole team . Although the conversion attempt was unsuccessful, Jersey moved in front 12-8.
Worthing hit back midway through the half with a try of their own to regain the lead at 13-12, but once again Jersey showed great composure.
James Molteno scored what proved to be the winning try, putting Jersey back in front at 17-13. The conversion drifted wide, leaving a tense finish.
The closing stages were made even more difficult when Jersey received two yellow cards, forcing them to defend with reduced numbers. However, the team dug deep, producing a determined defensive effort to keep Worthing out and secure the win.
At the final whistle, Jersey celebrated a hard-earned 17-13 victory to start the season on a positive note.
