Match Report

Under 10s Match Report – Saturday 2 May

Saturday 2 May proved to be a memorable and fitting finale to the season for Jersey’s Under 10s, as they faced Guernsey across three highly competitive matches in some of the toughest conditions the players had encountered all year.
Relentless rain fell throughout the day, placing extra demands on handling skills, fitness and mental toughness. The conditions reached their most dramatic point during the second match when rolling thunder and flashes of lightning nearly caused play to be stopped altogether. Despite this, all players showed outstanding courage, focus and resilience, embracing the challenge and demonstrating just how far they have progressed over the course of the season.

Game One:

Game One set the tone perfectly with a thrilling, high intensity contest. The first half was incredibly tight, with both sides battling fiercely for territory in the rain. Defensive lines were constantly tested and space was hard to come by, yet the tempo remained high throughout. Jersey showed great composure and clinical finishing to take their chances, going into the break with a well earned 2–0 lead.
The second half was equally intense, with Guernsey responding strongly and enjoying lengthy spells of attacking possession. Jersey’s defence rose to the challenge, meeting that pressure with outstanding intensity and real togetherness. When opportunities came, Jersey’s passing game began to shine through, with slick handling and excellent support play creating space out wide. Jersey added further tries through strong team moves before capping off a fantastic performance by scoring with the very final play of the game. The match finished 5–1 to Jersey — a deserved result in a fiercely contested and highly entertaining opening fixture.

Game Two:

The Second Game was every bit as demanding, both in terms of the opposition and the worsening conditions. As the weather intensified, Jersey produced one of their most composed performances of the day. Strong organisation, physicality and work around the breakdown saw Jersey dominate possession and territory during the first half, building sustained pressure and forcing Guernsey to defend for long periods. Despite the thunder and lightning adding further drama, Jersey remained focused and disciplined. That dominance continued into the second half, resulting in a healthy margin on the scoreboard at full time. Both teams deserve enormous credit for continuing to play with such commitment and spirit in extremely challenging circumstances.

Game Three:

The Third and Final Match was the ideal way to bring both the day and the season to a close. With tired legs, soaked kit and plenty of rugby already played, both teams still found the energy to raise the intensity once more. Guernsey were determined to finish strongly and pushed Jersey throughout, making it another hard fought contest. Jersey, however, showed great maturity, teamwork and resilience, defending stoutly and taking their chances well to once again come out on top.

Across all three matches, the rugby was played in the very best spirit of the game. The results were a fitting reward for a season of hard work, growth and commitment. One of the most pleasing aspects of the day was the very high skill level shown by all players, made even more impressive by the wet and unforgiving conditions. Passing, handling and decision making remained strong throughout, highlighting the progress made across the year. Defensively, the effort in the first game in particular stood out. Although Guernsey enjoyed plenty of attacking ball, Jersey’s defensive intensity was immense, with every player stepping up, working tirelessly for one another and setting the standard for the rest of the day. That collective determination, resilience and teamwork perfectly summed up what this exceptional group of players has been about all season, making it a proud and thoroughly deserved end to a fantastic year.
